Project: Floor Trench Alterations for Switchgear Replacement
Location: Charminster Substation, Dorchester (Live Switchyard)
Role: Principal Contractor
Duration: 6 weeks
The project comprised of studwork screening the existing apparatus diamond cutting the existing floor and diamond drilling for new duct banks through the switch house wall from the live compound.
The front section of the switch house contained a large void below a suspended reinforced concrete slab. Grant Construction suggested the use of C4 foam concrete as a means of filling the void. This was adopted by the client’s design consultants and duly carried out. With the void safely filled, a mini excavator could be used to lift out sections of the floor slab, which was sawn into manageable squares by a specialist. The next task involved removing the existing trench wall and rebuilding it (off of an existing foundation), on a new line.
Galvanised cable trench support steel and hardwood trench covers were then installed.
Whilst on site, Grant Construction was also tasked with carrying out the sensitive demolition of and ageing 7m high precast concrete external floodlight column, which had been leaning dangerously towards a 33kV transformer.
