Project: New Access Road + Extension to 33kV Substation
Location: Teffont
Client: Freedom (for SSEN)
Role: Contractor
Duration: Multiple-phased: November 2019 to October 2020
We were contracted to extend a 33kV compound in an environmentally sensitive rural setting, to accommodate the replacement of two aging and un-bunded transformers.
The works also included an indoor trench enlargement and switchgear change.
To facilitate this, a substantial replacement access road was constructed alongside the existing track, including a bellmouth highway abutment, all commencing over the winter period.
The extended compound and access road were enclosed with a 1.9m deer fence, installed by a specialist.
Due to the sloping nature of the site, the compound extension involved first constructing a bespoke in situ RC retaining wall, to accept new 3m palisade fencing with razor wire over.
Compound extended, the transformers were changed, one at a time.
The new RC bunded bases were sited within the footprint of the existing palisade fencing and concrete retaining wall, so this had to be dismantled + broken out sequentially.
The existing switchboard was replaced in two phases [to suit each new transformer]. For expediency, we detailed the necessary trench enlargement and support steelwork ourselves.
We also carried out trenching and joint pits for replacement cables on the site.
