The project involved the removal of the existing parapet walls, roof coverings and failing lightweight concrete roof plank structure.
The entire building was provided with a temporary roof and scaffolding enclosure,
with the internal live equipment being completely encased prior to a specifically designed scaffold crash deck being installed. The roof structure was carefully demolished and a new metal deck and insulated flat roof structure installed.
The roof replacement was carried out in two stages, due to the proximity of 132kV overhead equipment remaining live at each end of the building. All windows were replaced and concrete repairs completed to the precast window surrounds.
The confined nature of the switch room and the handling of long metal objects in
close proximity to the live equipment, required special attention to risk assessment and personal supervision of the subcontract scaffold operatives.
